Logopedics

The conception of education and the graduate's profile in the scope of the LOGOPEDICS majors. The graduate's profile and the conception of education, and also the plan and programme of the studies for the logopedics major are the original programme by prof. dr hab Zbigniew Tarkowski, a founder of the ‘ORATOR’ Foundation in Lublin. A graduate gains a professional title of licentiate.

He will acquire general pedagogical, sociological and psychological knowledge indispensable for understanding a social-cultural context of education, upbringing or care work as well as constructing his own professional development. He will also master practical skills in the scope of social communication, using diagnostic techniques, enriching and improving his knowledge and competences in the scope of practical working as well as creating his own methodical base.

The studies are the basis for gaining reliable professional preparation, developing the ability of a reflective look at his own professional role as well as deepened understanding of educational reality.

On the basis of these competences in the scope of the ‘logopedics’ major the graduate will be prepared for a teacher - speech therapist occupation (specialization number 235903 in the Decree of Minister of Economy and Work of 8 December 2004 on the job qualification for needs of labour market and the scope of its applying) or a speech therapist - specialist of health protection (specialization number 223904 in the same Decree).

According to the Decree of Minister of National Education and Sport of 7 January 2003 on the principles of giving and organizing psychological-pedagogical help in public kindergartens, schools and institutions..., teachers possessing preparation in the field of logopedics or school logopedics / paragraph 7.1.3 / can run specialist logopedic activities for children and pupils with disorders of speech. These disorders disturb linguistic communication and make learning difficult.

In relation to the above mentioned Decree of MENiS / paragraph 15.5 / a graduate of logopedic licentiate is to be prepared to perform a speech therapist’s tasks such as:

• carrying out screening tests,

• organization of logopedic help,

• logopedic diagnosing,

• conducting logopedic individual and group therapy,

• organizing logopedic help for children with difficulties in reading and writing,

• prophylaxis of linguistic therapy disorders,

• supporting actions of teachers, tutors, psychologists, pedagogists and doctors working with people with speech disorders.

To enable the graduate of ‘pedagogy’ faculty, ‘logopedics’ major to fulfill above mentioned tasks, he has to learn basic practical skills such as:

• distinguishing speech from linguistic norm,

• defining etiology of speech disorders,

• diagnosing and classifying different speech disorders,

• estimating the level of speech development,

• prognosing development of speech disorders,

• preventing deepening of speech disorders and their psychical and social consequences,

• stimulating development of speech, which is delayed or was stopped,

• learning different programmes, methods and techniques of speech disorders therapy,

• communicating with people with speech disorders and their leaders,

• learning principles of voice emission and hygiene,

• providing competent, extra-logopedic help for people with speech disorders and their

  leaders,

A graduate with a title of licentiate in the scope of logopedics will be prepared on a level matching the European standards and he will be a conscious professional who:

• has the feeling of logopedic occupation identity,

• knows and follows the principles of ethical code of a speech therapist occupation,

• understands the need of professional improvement and continual education,

• takes care about professional and social image of a speech therapist,

The ‘pedagogy’ faculty, ‘logopedics’ major prepares graduates to work in a sector of services demand for which is continually growing. It creates the possibility of continuing education on the MA level or postgraduate studies.
