Health care

On the territory of Poland function free and payable (private) health care systems. Basic information referring to the basic health care has been given below:
Basic Health Care (POZ, a doctor of the first contact) is a name of the basic element of health care in Poland.

A unit of basic health care (earlier local health centre) is an institution of medical care, holding a complex care over population. It means treatment and diseases preventive treatment, as well as a statement about the state of health. In this case a surgery providing patients with health care services becomes the service-provider of POZ. Doctors working in POZ can be both family doctors as well as teams of internists plus pediatrists. POZ is also obliged to assure patients of  local nurse and midwife’s care.

Organizationally POZ can work as:

·      a non-public institution of health care (NZOZ) – a private firm

·      an independent public institution of health care (SPZOZ) - a state unit or subordinate to local councils

·      individual medical practice - private medical practice

·      team medical practice – a group of private medical practices

Institutions POZ are independent (apart from SPZOZ) firms, however, services provided by them are free for insured people because they are financed by National Health Fund when special contracts are signed.
